Q: What is the first and last day of school for 2013-2014?
A: First day of class is August 26th and the last day is June 5th. (Please see school calendar or online at http://www.austinisd.org/)
Q: When will I find out which teacher has been assigned to my child?
A: Teachers will personally make a telephone call starting Friday, August 16th, to introduce themselves to your child. “Meet the Teacher” time will be from 3-5pm on Wednesday, August 21st. This will give you and your child an opportunity to meet their teacher, learn where their class is located and bring their school supplies.
Q: What is the earliest time I can drop off my child in the morning?
A: The doors open at 7:05am. If you are in the building, please remember to go by the office for a name tag.
Q: Can my child eat breakfast at school?
A: Yes, breakfast is available for those children who arrive between 7:05 and 7:30 so they have time to eat. Breakfast cost is currently $1.25.
Q: What time does my child need to be at school every day and when are classes over?
A: We strongly recommend students are here by 7:30 to participate in the school wide morning assembly in the cafeteria. Children need to be with their teacher at 7:45 or they will be counted TARDY. The drop off and pick up line follows the back drive at the back of the campus to the drop off zone near the 4th grade classrooms.
Q: If I am picking up my child at dismissal, where is the best place to meet them?
A: Please pick your child up along the drop off zone. As you pull up along the drive, your child’s name will be called out. This procedure expedites the dismissal process. Please do not sit or park your car at the beginning of the circular drive. This stops the dismissal process. The bus loop by the blue tarp is for buses only. The front drive is closed to all drop off and pick up traffic.
Q: Is after school care available?
A: Extend-a-Care is available on campus until 6:30pm. Menchaca Methodist, La Petite, South Austin Karate, Primrose, and Kids Network pick up children after school. Extend-A-Care pick up is in the rear of the building by the blue tarp.
Q: What do I need to know about lunch?
A: Menus go home at the beginning of each month and are also posted on the AISD web site located at www.austinisd.org. Please follow the ‘Parent Information’ link. Lunch with milk is currently $2.25. Milk alone is .60 and snacks are .50-$1.00. You may pay for your child’s lunch in advance by sending cash in a sealed envelope (sorry…no checks accepted) to your teacher. Please be sure to put your child’s name, teacher’s name, child’s PIN number, and the amount of money enclosed on the outside of the envelope. Students will be issued their PIN number at the beginning of school. You may also pay ahead online at www.mylunchmoney.com (this is not affiliated with AISD).
Q: Can I join my child for lunch?
A: We welcome you to join your child for lunch. You may purchase a lunch tray for $3.00. For security reasons, we ask that you always sign in at the front office and pick up a visitor tag anytime you are on campus. Please remember your child is limited to having only one friend join you for lunch.
Q: What should I do if my child will be absent?
A: If your child is absent, please send a note with your child (within 2 days) on the day they return with the reason for the absence. IF a physician saw your child, please attach a doctor’s note. More than three days absent requires a doctor’s note. Children who do not arrive by 10:00 a.m. will be counted absent.
Q: What should I do if my child has a doctor’s appointment during the school day?
A: If you have a doctor’s appointment, Students will not be called out of class until parents arrive. You will need to provide a doctor’s note upon return in order to excuse their time away from school. If your child leaves in the afternoon, notes must also be provided the next day. All partial absences are documented as tardies.
Q: What does it mean when days are referred to as A, B, C days?
A: Each class is assigned a schedule for special areas (Music, Art, P.E.). This “order” will vary from class to class so you will need to confirm with your teacher what schedule your student will follow. For example, your child may have Music on “A” days, Art on “B” days, and P.E. on “C” days. Whatever schedule is assigned will remain in effect for the year.
Q: Can my child wear sandals to school?
A: Athletic shoes are required each day. Students will have either PE or WOW (structured physical activity) time each day.
Q: What should I do if my child is going home a different way than usual?
A: Please send a note with your child informing the teacher of the change. We will not send a child home a different way without hearing from the parent. Please make sure anyone picking up your child is authorized on your transportation list, in the school office.
Q: Can I call the classroom anytime to speak with the teacher or my child?
A: We want to limit classroom interruptions so please do not call the teacher during regular classroom hours. Instead, please call the office at 414-2333 and ask to leave a message on the teacher’s voice mail. Teacher’s check their voice mail several times a day and will call you when it is more convenient. If you have a last minute dismissal change, please inform the office and they will make sure your child gets the message. Please avoid making last minute changes after 2:30pm.
Q: What is the CAC?
A: It is the Campus Advisory Council and is comprised of teachers, office personnel, parents and community members. They meet once a month as an advisory committee to the principal regarding budget, safety and school policy. You may address this committee if you have a concern in these areas. If you would like to join as a parent member, please let the front office know.
Q: Can we celebrate birthdays at school?
A: You may provide cupcakes, and juice for your child’s class. All birthday goodies are shared after 1:30pm. Please let teacher know in advance of these celebrations. NO balloons are allowed, as they cause much distraction in class, and are not allowed on the bus.
Q: What if my child needs to take medication while at school?
A: You will need to see the nurse and sign a medical consent form. All prescribed medication must have child’s name clearly labeled (from pharmacy). Over the counter medication must have original label/box on it. Children cannot be given dosages intended for adults unless a doctor’s note is provided. All medications must be administered in the nurse’s office.

A: You can get information about Menchaca by going to www.austinisd.org and choosing ‘Schools’, then ‘Elementary’ from the drop down menu. Scroll down and click Menchaca. From there, choose “Visit our main web site.” Our calendar, school supply list and much more is available to view.
